John Pawson studied at the Architectural Association, London, leaving to establish his own practice in 1981. His work spans a broad range of scales and typologies, from the Sackler Crossing at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, a flagship store for Calvin Klein and major commissions for Ian Schrager; to ballet sets, a new Cistercian monastery in Bohemia, The Feuerle Collection; and the newly configured interior of the Design Museum, London. A mid-career retrospective of his work was held at the Design Museum in September 2010. In 2014 he was named German Design Council Interior Designer of the Year. His first photography exhibition was shown in London in 2018. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to Design and Architecture.
