Anthony Powell studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London, and was apprenticed to both Oliver Messel and Cecil Beaton. Working for both stage and screen, he has collaborated, amongst others, with George Cukor, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and David Lean. Over the last thirty years, Anthony has worked closely with Roman Polanski, designing costumes for both cinema and theatre productions, including Amadeus, Pirates and Hedda Gabler. Stars who have worn his creations include Maggie Smith, Bette Davis, Steve McQueen, Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman, and Harrison Ford. He has won three Academy Awards for Travels with My Aunt (1972), Death on the Nile (1978) and Tess (1979). For his work on the film Pirates the designer received a César award in 1987.
